One of the most popular character dining experiences in Walt Disney World is the dinner at Chef Mickey's (located at the Contemporary Resort). Chef Mickey's features some of the most beloved classic Disney characters - Goofy, Donald, Pluto, Minnie, and Mickey Mouse himself host the meal.

The meal itself is buffet style, and features a wide assortment of tasty food. The characters mingle with the guests while they eat - each character will stop by your table for a picture, an autograph, and a moment or two of Disney magic.

However, one family gets to enjoy an extra slice of magic each evening - the Family of the Day. After each character is introduced (with a lot of cheering and clapping), the Family of the Day gets cerimonially seated at their table by Mickey Mouse himself. He loves to take kids by the hand and lead them to their table - if you are lucky enough to receive this honor, make sure to have your camera ready!

If you'd like the chance to experience this magical opportunity, you need to be prepared. First of all, you need to make an advance dining reservation for a party of four as close to 5:00 PM as possible. 5:00 PM is usually the first available reservation time of the day; however, when making your reservation, be sure to double check that there will be no earlier times that day. This honor almost always goes to a family who is there early!

Beware that character dining meals fill up quickly - it is wise to make reservations as soon as possible. Disney allows reservations up to 180 days in advance, so take advantage of this.

Arrive early! Guests often arrive at around 4:30 PM, even if no cast member is at the podium yet. Don't be afraid to start forming the line as soon as you arrive - being first in line is definitely a good thing.

When you check in, request to be seated in Chef Mickey's Cove - specifically, ask for table 66 or 67. Be friendly and enthusiastic (after all, who wants to pick a sourpuss for this honor?).

Please realize that the cast members on duty have the final say as to who the Family of the Day is, but if you follow these tips, you give yourself the best chance possible of living this extra piece of Disney magic.
